Wisdom Teeth Removal Adelaide

Wisdom Tooth Assessment and Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Most people develop four wisdom teeth, although some may have fewer or none at all.

When there is not enough space in the jaw, wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and other dental problems. At Allenby Gardens Dental, our dentists assess wisdom teeth carefully and recommend the most suitable treatment based on your individual needs.

When Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems

Wisdom teeth may need to be removed if they cause:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Infection
  • Toothache
  • Food trapping
  • Crowding
  • Cyst formation
  • Damage to nearby teeth

To assess the position of your wisdom teeth, we may recommend X-rays or 3D scans. These images help us decide whether extraction can be performed in the clinic or whether referral for sedation or general anaesthetic is more appropriate.

Wisdom Tooth Treatment Options

Depending on the complexity of the case, we may provide wisdom tooth extraction in our clinic. In some situations, we may recommend referral to a specialist for removal under sedation or general anaesthetic.

If you attend with pain or infection, immediate extraction may not always be possible during an emergency appointment. In these cases, we may gently clean the area around the tooth and advise you on ways to reduce discomfort, such as regular salt water rinses, until definitive treatment can be arranged.

Our team will guide you through the process and help you achieve the best possible outcome.

Please arrive 10 mins earlier to fill in our new patient medical and dental history form, so that we can gather all the information before discussing with our dentist your chief concerns, which we will aim to address first. If time permits, our dentists will perform a thorough exam of your teeth and take some X-rays to make sure we identify all issues in regards to your oral health. We will then provide you with insights about your teeth and oral hygiene, and if required - discuss possible personalised treatment options with you, providing detailed explanations using visuals from photos and X-rays. We don’t just look after you today but we also plan with you for the next 10 years.

At Allenby Gardens Dental, we recommend our patients to come back twice a year to have a regular check up and clean. This can help us to identify problems early and treat the issue when it is easy to manage. It is also important to maintain the healthiness of your teeth and gum.

We recommend parents to bring their child in for their first visit when their first tooth has come through. This will allow the kid to get used to the dental environment and enjoy a ride in the chair. Our goal is to establish a comfortable and pleasant experience for the child and establish a good impression from a young age, so that we can help guide them towards looking after their oral hygiene together.
