Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS)

Bulk Billed Children’s Dental Care with No Gap for Eligible General Services

At Allenby Gardens Dental, we support eligible families through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, as known as CDBS Adelaide parents rely on for affordable children’s dental care. If your child is eligible for the CDBS, we electronically bulk bill covered general dental services, so in most cases there is no out-of-pocket cost unless your child has already used their available balance.

The CDBS is an Australian Government program that helps eligible children access basic dental care. It covers up to $1,158 over 2 consecutive calendar years for children whose current benefit period starts in 2026. The 2-year cap period begins when your child receives their first eligible dental service in that period. Any unused balance can be used in the second year if your child remains eligible, but unused funds do not carry forward into the next benefit period.

What does the CDBS cover?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers a range of basic dental services for eligible children, including:

  • dental check-ups and examinations
  • professional cleaning and scale
  • dental X-rays
  • fissure sealants
  • fillings
  • root canal treatment
  • tooth extractions

The scheme does not cover cosmetic dental treatment, orthodontics, or services provided in hospital.

Who is eligible for the CDBS?

Your child may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule if they:

  • are 0 to 17 years old for at least one day in the calendar year
  • are eligible for Medicare
  • receive an eligible government payment, or have a parent, carer, or guardian who receives one, at least once during the year

Eligible payments may include:

  • Family Tax Benefit Part A
  • Parenting Payment
  • Double Orphan Pension
  • ABSTUDY
  • Carer Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Special Benefit
  • Youth Allowance

Many families receive a letter from Medicare confirming eligibility. You can also check through your Medicare online account or contact our team and we can help guide you through the process.

No gap fees for eligible general dental services

Allenby Gardens Dental electronically bulk bills eligible services under the CDBS. That means there is no gap fee for covered general dental treatment while your child still has available benefits under the scheme.

We also make the process simple. Our team can help you understand what is covered, explain how much of the benefit may still be available, and organise your child’s appointment with minimal hassle.

Why families use the CDBS early

Many parents wait until their child has tooth pain before booking. However, the CDBS is ideal for preventive dental care, not just treatment. Regular dental visits can help detect early signs of decay, monitor dental development, and build positive habits that support lifelong oral health.

Using the benefit for routine care may help your child avoid more complex dental problems later.

We welcome new patients to join our Allenby Gardens Dental family. We look forward to meeting you and looking after you, we’ll also extend our welcome and service to your wider circle of family and friends.

Please arrive 10 mins earlier to fill in our new patient medical and dental history form, so that we can gather all the information before discussing with our dentist your chief concerns, which we will aim to address first. If time permits, our dentists will perform a thorough exam of your teeth and take some X-rays to make sure we identify all issues in regards to your oral health. We will then provide you with insights about your teeth and oral hygiene, and if required - discuss possible personalised treatment options with you, providing detailed explanations using visuals from photos and X-rays. We don’t just look after you today but we also plan with you for the next 10 years.

At Allenby Gardens Dental, we recommend our patients to come back twice a year to have a regular check up and clean. This can help us to identify problems early and treat the issue when it is easy to manage. It is also important to maintain the healthiness of your teeth and gum.

We recommend parents to bring their child in for their first visit when their first tooth has come through. This will allow the kid to get used to the dental environment and enjoy a ride in the chair. Our goal is to establish a comfortable and pleasant experience for the child and establish a good impression from a young age, so that we can help guide them towards looking after their oral hygiene together.
