Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS)

Treatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

A Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is an oral appliance used to help manage snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). At Allenby Gardens Dental, our dentists provide customised MAS treatment to help improve airflow during sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnoea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep, causing breathing interruptions. Common symptoms include loud snoring, restless sleep, choking or gasping during the night, morning headaches, and excessive daytime tiredness.

How a Mandibular Advancement Splint Works

A mandibular advancement splint is similar to a custom night guard. It works by gently positioning the lower jaw forward during sleep, which helps keep the airway open and reduces the risk of obstruction.

By supporting the jaw in a forward position, the splint can also help prevent the tongue from falling backwards and blocking the airway.

When MAS May Help

A custom MAS may be suitable for patients with:

  • Mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Chronic snoring
  • Restless sleep
  • Daytime tiredness related to poor sleep quality

Our dentists will assess your condition and discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

Please arrive 10 mins earlier to fill in our new patient medical and dental history form, so that we can gather all the information before discussing with our dentist your chief concerns, which we will aim to address first. If time permits, our dentists will perform a thorough exam of your teeth and take some X-rays to make sure we identify all issues in regards to your oral health. We will then provide you with insights about your teeth and oral hygiene, and if required - discuss possible personalised treatment options with you, providing detailed explanations using visuals from photos and X-rays. We don’t just look after you today but we also plan with you for the next 10 years.

At Allenby Gardens Dental, we recommend our patients to come back twice a year to have a regular check up and clean. This can help us to identify problems early and treat the issue when it is easy to manage. It is also important to maintain the healthiness of your teeth and gum.

We recommend parents to bring their child in for their first visit when their first tooth has come through. This will allow the kid to get used to the dental environment and enjoy a ride in the chair. Our goal is to establish a comfortable and pleasant experience for the child and establish a good impression from a young age, so that we can help guide them towards looking after their oral hygiene together.
